Murrook Cultural Excursion

Year 5 and 6 students attended the Murrook Culture Centre today as part of their Aboriginal History unit this term. They participated in a variety of activities, including Aboriginal Totem Art with Rachel, Bush Medicine and Tucker with Makayla, Aboriginal Artefacts with Adam, and Worimi History with Steve. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to learn about Worimi culture from Worimi men and women. Thank you to the teachers who accompanied Year 5 and 6 today, and a special thank you to Kristy Pascoe, Lucy’s Mum, for giving up her time to come along with us today. Enjoy the photos from our day.

Harmony Day

Thank you to everyone who helped us celebrate Harmony Day at Tighes Hill PS today. It was so wonderful to see so many kids dressed in orange and traditional dress and talking about why they had chosen their outfits. Our Year 6 students got the chance to be mini teachers today and visit other classes and help students create their own personalised boomerang artworks with a variety of Aboriginal symbols and Maori symbols and patterns. These boomerangs are going to be displayed at school in an art display set up by Mrs Derricott. We shared a harmonious lunch with our families and my goodness was there a lot of food! There were so many dishes from different cultures and everyone was very keen to try something new. Thank you so much to our generous families for the amazing food you brought in and shared today. After lunch, we enjoyed performances from all year groups, as well as our Junior and Senior Choirs, led by our talented Miss Hibbert. Please enjoy these photos and videos from our Harmony Day celebrations below.

This week is NAIDOC Week for 2016. Last week, we celebrated NAIDOC week. We began with an assembly that included a traditional smoking ceremony and performances from the Millibah Dance Group from HSPA. Students then worked in groups and rotated through a range of cultural activities including face painting, dance, beading, and bush tucker. It was a wonderful day. Thank you to Miss Chapman and the Aboriginal Education Team for organising the event. Be sure to have a look at the numerous photos below!
