Weekly Imaginative Writing Prompt: The $5 Island

Below is our Weekly Imaginative Writing Prompt, The $5 Island. Create an imaginative narrative based on this picture. Remember that quality writers show, don’t tell. Try writing using some or all of the 5 senses (smell, taste, touch, hear, sight), and adding in some figurative devices (metaphor, simile, personification, pun, alliteration, etc.). Make sure your story has a solid resolution and doesn’t end too abruptly (no waking up from a dream endings please). We will also be working on this in class throughout the week. Publish your writing on your student blog once you have edited and revised it. I am excited about reading your imaginative ideas, 6B!

Class Speeches – Term 4

Today students in 5B were given their task description for their Speaking & Listening task for Term 4. The topic for this term’s speech is Free Choice. I encourage any student to approach me well before the due date (Week 8) for assistance or feedback on researching, drafting, editing, and presenting their speech and multimedia presentation. Looking forward to the topics that 5B are going to talk about! Below is a digital copy of the task and the marking rubric.

Tips:

  • Make a plan to work on a little bit of your task each afternoon (e.g. Tuesday – 10 minutes research, Wednesday – 15 minutes highlighting and summarising information, etc.) so that you do not leave your task to the last minute.
  • Ask your parents or teacher for help where needed, but do not depend on them to do it for you 🙂

Careers Through Reading

Today, our Year 5 students got the opportunity to take part in the Careers Through Reading program with the Aim High team from the University of Newcastle.

The program involves university students leading small reading group sessions and conversations about lifelong learning and post-school education opportunities. The program aims to strengthen the existing literacy component already provided in our school. During the visits students will continue to learn to interact confidently with their peers; speak confidently in group discussions; listen strategically and read with comprehension. The cross-curricular activity-based model for Careers Through Reading aims to strengthen the students’ love of reading whilst linking the importance of reading for positive educational outcomes.

Below is a great video about the program from the University of Newcastle and some photos from our first session today.

Persuade Me!

sports people are not heroes

OK, 5B, post an argument in the comments, either for or against this statement. Bonus points if you include a persuasive technique and a real-world example. Persuade me!
