Position: Coordinates

This week in Maths, 6B had to solve a Position course on the Bottom Court. They were given a grid of the court that looked like this and told that they had to locate the following symbols on the court and draw them in on the coordinates they felt matched their position:

Here is a copy of the grid that I had and where I had placed each symbol (stuck to a witches hat):

The results were pretty close, considering the grid map was not a perfect scaled version of our bottom court at THPS. It was a fun way to get outside and learn about Maths. Click here for the activity.

Position: Direct a robot

This week we are learning all about Position in Maths. We have been working on using grid-referenced maps, using directional language, following sequences of directions, and using compass directions. Here is a game that we have been playing in class, Direct a Robot – the aim is to design a route for a robot to collect all the materials it needs on its mission and find its way back to its home base before running out of fuel. You can play online by clicking here. Bonus challenge – take a screen shot (Print Screen) of your route after you have completed it and post it to your blog for me to see (save as a picture file, such as a jpeg, first).

Maths: Position – Battleships

This week in Maths we are learning about how coordinates work in Position. Here is a fun way to practise learning your coordinates, by playing Battleships online.

Disclaimer: while there is a chat function online, I have strongly advised students to only play the game and not to use this as a way to chat with random people on the internet. I have recommended that students use the ‘Play a Friend’ game option and send the link to their match to someone they know in real life.
