Blind Date with a Book: Student edition

Proud teacher moment today! Harper and Joey brought in a book each today that they had wrapped up and written clues on for ‘Blind Date with a Book’. I am so happy to see kids getting into reading this term. Looking forward to seeing what other mystery books make their way into our classroom over the next few weeks. Thanks, Harper and Joey! You guys are awesome!

Ballad of a WiFi Hero

Today we watched a short animation called, ‘Ballad of a WiFi Hero‘ and discussed the Narrative Arc of the story. We talked about the six main components of a narrative – exposition, conflict, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.

We then identified the six main plot points in ‘Ballad of a WiFi Hero’ and created a storyboard. Below are storyboard’s by Imogen, Haydn, and Immy. I was very impressed with the detail and quality of these storyboards.

Speak Off

Congratulations to Olivia and Ember, who were the winners of our Stage 3 Speak Off, and to Georgie and Jules, who were the winners of our Stage 2 Speak Off. It was a very tough competition with so many wonderful speakers. A shout out to Nyah and Hunter, who represented 5B and did a wonderful job. I was incredibly proud of all our speakers, as it can be quite nerve-wracking having to talk in front of such a large group of people, both in class and at the Speak Off. Olivia, Ember, Georgie, and Jules will now represent our school at a variety of public speaking competitions later this year with Mrs Derricott.

Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays, 5B! It has been a very busy term with lots happening at THPS, and you have all impressed me with your efforts and attitudes. I hope you have enjoyed our topics of Microorganisms and Australia as a Nation: Immigration. Enjoy your well deserved break. Feel free to share your adventures during the holidays on your blog. See you in Term 2!

History: what does it mean to be Australian?

This term in History, Stage 3 are studying the unit of Australia as a Nation – Immigration. To kick off the unit we talked about what it means to be Australian. As a group, the students spoke of different Australian icons such as Uluru, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Vegemite, Advance Australia Fair, and many more. Then we talked about who we had forgotten to include and how we could try and be more inclusive of others when talking about being “Australian”. From here, students were asked to redesign the Australian flag. The design brief required them to include symbols that included all Australians. It was a proud teacher moment when Imogen showed me her flag design. What a wonderful generation of children we have to guide our world.
