Reading Buddies

3D and 6B have teamed up for Reading Buddies this year! We have met up a few times this term and shared a book that we are currently reading with our buddy. 6B are currently working on an exciting writing project to share with their buddy! Stay tuned…

Blind Date with a Book: Student edition

Proud teacher moment today! Harper and Joey brought in a book each today that they had wrapped up and written clues on for ‘Blind Date with a Book’. I am so happy to see kids getting into reading this term. Looking forward to seeing what other mystery books make their way into our classroom over the next few weeks. Thanks, Harper and Joey! You guys are awesome!

Blind Date with a Book!

Seeing as Valentine’s Day was this week, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to start a new reading activity with 6B called ‘Blind Date with a Book’. The way it works is there is a selection of mystery books, wrapped in brown paper, with cryptic descriptions about the type of book inside. Students find a book with a description they find interesting and open the packaging to find a book to read. On Thursday, there were 6 books to choose from and were so popular that they were snapped up straight away! I had to bring in a load more books for blind dates on Friday!

Bookish Bingo

Congratulations to Jessamy and Finlay who completed this term’s Bookish Bingo challenge. Finlay received a copy of ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ as his prize (a must read for anyone), and Jessamy received a copy of ‘Heidi’ (one of my favourite books as a kid). I look forward to seeing which categories everyone chooses for next term’s Bookish Bingo!

Owl Post

Some mysterious letters arrived in 6B today, delivered by a very clumsy owl…

6B were very excited to receive their Hogwarts letters! We have displayed them in our room and can be taken home after we have finished reading ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’.

Wonder

Today we finished reading our class novel, Wonder, by R.J. Palacio. This has been one of the most emotional and thought-provoking novels that I have read with a class and is one that 5B have thoroughly enjoyed reading.

Mr. Browne’s precepts play an important part in Wonder. A precept is a rule to live by. In addition to his precepts, Auggie and his classmates offer some of their own over the summer at the end of the novel. 5B found precepts that best represented how they feel about the world and created artworks based off the book jacket style of Wonder with them. Browse through our gallery of precepts below.

Careers Through Reading

Today, our Year 5 students got the opportunity to take part in the Careers Through Reading program with the Aim High team from the University of Newcastle.

The program involves university students leading small reading group sessions and conversations about lifelong learning and post-school education opportunities. The program aims to strengthen the existing literacy component already provided in our school. During the visits students will continue to learn to interact confidently with their peers; speak confidently in group discussions; listen strategically and read with comprehension. The cross-curricular activity-based model for Careers Through Reading aims to strengthen the students’ love of reading whilst linking the importance of reading for positive educational outcomes.

Below is a great video about the program from the University of Newcastle and some photos from our first session today.
